Forgetting your wallet is a little less of a disaster than it used to be. In a growing number of states, you can add your driver’s license or state ID right to your iPhone and use it at airport security.

Here’s where it works, what’s coming next and what you should know before you leave your plastic card at home.

States Where It Works Now

As of fall 2026, these 16 states and Puerto Rico let residents add their license or ID to Apple Wallet:

ArizonaArkansasCaliforniaColorado
GeorgiaHawaiiIllinoisIowa
MarylandMontanaNew MexicoNorth Dakota
OhioOklahomaVirginiaWest Virginia

Puerto Rico is also supported.

States Coming Soon

A few more states have said they’re working on it, though none have given firm launch dates:

  • Kentucky has said it plans to launch support.
  • Connecticut and Mississippi have committed to adding it.
  • Utah appears to be in the works, based on references found in Apple’s systems.

Can You Use It at the Airport?

Yes, at many airports, but not everywhere. TSA accepts digital IDs at eligible checkpoints, and availability can depend on the airport and even the lane. Apple has also started testing a separate digital ID based on a U.S. passport, which it says is rolling out in beta at more than 250 airports for domestic flights.

Should You Leave Your Physical License at Home?

Not yet. A digital ID is handy, but you should still carry your real card. Here’s why:

  • Not every TSA lane or airport accepts digital IDs yet.
  • Rules on whether police accept a digital license during a traffic stop vary by state.
  • Many businesses, like bars, banks and car rental counters, may still ask for the physical card.
  • If your phone dies, your digital ID goes with it.

How to Add Your License

If your state is supported, open the Wallet app on your iPhone, tap the + button and choose Driver’s License or State ID. You’ll be asked to scan your license and take a selfie so your state can verify it’s you. Approval usually takes a short time.

What About Android?

Google Wallet and Samsung Wallet also support digital IDs in some states. The list of states isn’t the same as Apple’s, so check your state DMV’s website to see what’s available for your phone.
